The origin of the name " Kodakara " is associated with Kodakara Nair family. Now the descendants of this family is at Nenmara in Palakad district. Nenmara is only 14 kms. away from Kodakara, If we crosses Palapilly and Adiperanda hills.
Kodakara Nair family was vested with some positions and powers. They were known as " Adhikari's ".They were sent to Nenmara for the rule and protection of 5 villages ( Ailoor , Thiruvazhiyodu , Nenmara , Vallangy , vithanassery.).The word" Koda " is associated with power and position. The land Under the rule Kodakara Nair Adhikari was known as "Kodaka Kara"
and later it became Kodakara.

In olden days kodakara was under the rule of * " Samantha Raja " Ayyan Chirukanadan". Kodakara and its neighbouring area
was possessed by Panthalloor Pallath Madom Kartha's. Panthalloor is only 2 Kms. away from kodakara on the banks of Kurumali river. |
The neighbouring Kodassery Kartha's Captured a large area of land owned by Pallath Madom Kartha's .
However pallath Madom Kartha's succeeded in protecting some area . They were reluctant to surrender it. That land was later known as " Kodukkatha kara ". Then it was shortened to Kodakara

Social And Cultural History of Kodakara
Historical Events of much importants had'nt taken place in around kodakara. However the people of Kodakara was lucky to witness many notable social and political activities. People belongs to scheduled caste at Manakulangara area (about 1 km south from Kodakara) was able to take bathe in the temple pond and offer prayers in front of the temple even before Sri Chithira Tirunal's famous "Temple entry proclamation in the year 1936. Some of the leaders of this campaigne are still alive.(Sri. P.P. Kunji pengan,Sri. P.C. Velayudhan, Sri.C.P. Kannan). The people of kodakara actively participated in the campaignes and struggles against untouchability and other social evils. They offered support in social reformation activities.(struggles of Paliyam and Kuttamkulam). The newspaper "Swathanthra Bharatham" was published from Kodakara.Dr. N.V. Krishna varyar was it's chief editor. As the authorities prohibited it's publication, the printing of the newspaper was done in secret. National leaders of various political parties including Jawar Lal Nehru, Indira Gandhi,B.T. Ranadev,L.K. Adwani,Murali Manohar Joshi etc. had visited kodakara. C. Achutha Menon former chief minister of kerala represented Kodakara legslative assembly.

Konichode&Plavinchode: In olden days all important meetings of citizen's of kodakara was held at this place. Now the post
box at Irinjalakuda road is at this spot.
Azad Hind theatre: The first cineama theatre of kodakara. Now the police station of kodakara is situated at this building.
Later Dwaraka theatre was opened by Cine. Artist Rani Chandra. Ambadi & Vrindavan are other theatres.
First bus service: A.R.Menon , P.S.N., N.T.P.(kodakara - Ezhattumukh)
kodakara owns the heritage of shashti festival in kerala.. It is believed that the shashti festival of kunnuthrikkovil Sri.Subrahmanya Swami temple had begun 120 years ago.

famous teachers of this school
Kodakara Grama Panchayath was formed in the year 1952 and Sri Krishnakutty Panikkar was first President.
